The first thing you must do when you buy a car is to determine a price that is suitable. Preset a spending limit based on your ability to spend money. Another less unethical way of acquiring a cheap vehicle is to offer a trade. Up north, most take ATV’s and snowmobiles as viable trades. Sometimes even another vehicle if the condition is what they are looking for. It’s all about topography and learning where you are and what people like wherever that is.

The trick is to make the current owner think he or she is making a great deal for themselves, and with the economy like it is, just about any kind of money for something that old is a great deal on their behalf. But there are still newer cars that are great on gas that most would love to own. Bring up safety issues such as the size of the car, how well would it do in a crash, how expensive is it to have the vehicle serviced when required, how much are new tires, and the like.

Keep a close eye out for damage such as a rotting frame or sub frame as these problems will deter any reputable registered inspection shop from inspecting your vehicle. It’s required in most states in order to register and insure the vehicle. So be wary and on your toes, buying a car- even from a single owner- can be a headache but it can be done.

Before you start you should supply some required things.  You will need a circular saw, lumber – 4- by- 4 inch and 2- by- 6 inch, lag bolts and nuts, wrench set, small square, drill and a drill bit and a pencil.

First you should measure and cut the foundation.  Lay three 4- by- 4 inch pieces of lumber across the width of the truck frame.  After that, using your pencil and square, mark the desired length and when this is done, cut the lumber to length.

Floorboards should be also cut to length so measure the 2- by- 6 inch lumber against the length of the truck frame, and then mark and cut it.  Each peace should be measured and marked individually to be sure that has the correct length.

Model the flatbed, starting by laying the 4- by- 4 inch lumber across the frame of the truck.  One at the front and back and one across the middle, parallel to one another.  The 2- by-6 inch lumber should be placed on top of and it should be perpendicular to this foundation, each peace should lay flat, side by side, until the whole area is covered.  When you place all the pieces, check your work. Maybe you’ll be in a need of adjusting the length or width of any of the boards.  Mark the extra peaces and cut them.

Next step is installing the foundation.  When you are done with the final adaptations, remove the 2- by- 6 inch floorboards.  You must be sure that the three pieces of 4- by- 4 inch lumber are placed as it was described in the previous step.  After that, drill through both ends of each piece of 4- by- 4 inch lumber into and through the frame of the truck.  In each hole from the top should be placed a lag bolt.  Thread a nut onto the bolt from the bottom and tight it with a wrench.

The final step is the floor.  All of yours 2- by- 6 inch floorboards should be laid in a place.  Drill a hole through the centre of the floorboard into and through the underlying foundation, on the place where each floorboard intersects a foundation board.  Make a three drill holes for each floorboard and place a lag bolt in each hole from the top.  Last step is to thread a nut onto each bolt from the bottom, and tighten with a wrench.

Mike Tredway of Lebanon, Missouri has spent the better part of his life as an over the road truck driver. He knows the highways and back roads of our great United States and Canada like the back of his hand. Whats more so, is that he also spent many years working on these big rigs and then later he began rebuilding cars and trucks that had been wrecked.

One look at Mike, and 10 minutes into any conversation with him, you will immediately peg him as a trucker. His real passion, however, is building Peterbilt Pick-Up Trucks. Meshing together the chassis of full size pick up trucks such as Cheverolet,Dodge,Ford and GMC with the bigger dogs such as Peterbilt,Freightliner,Mack, etc., is the perfect blend for Mike. His experience and love for trucks, big and small has helped to create a true work of art.

Where does one start when contemplating such a task as building a “little big truck?” The chassis is the first place to start. Mike can start with a regular chassis, super-duty or what ever and add the motor of your choice, suspension, transmission and most importantly…the cab of what ever big rig you choose.

The first truck he built, he didn’t cut down any on the size of the cab. The finished product was beautiful but the lines of the body didn’t suit him. It was too obvious that it was two different vehicles put together to make one.

Mike is somewhat of a perfectionist, and realizing how this truck looked just didn’t set well with him. He decided there would have to be some subtle modifications made to the cabs of the big trucks in order for them to match the lines of the pick up truck beds/wheel wells, etc.

Since that first inseption, he has grown and developed his process of building Peterbilt Pick-Up Trucks to the point that they look like they could have been built in Detroit. But one closer look to the custom interiors, paint jobs, wheels, stacks and his favorite 502 Crate Motor, and you can see there is nothing ordinary about these pick up trucks.

Each pick up truck that is built starts with an indepth conversation with the potential buyer. Mike likes to get to know the customer so their wants, dreams and desires regarding their Peterbilt Pick Up Truck can be incorporated into the build to make it truly a custom, one of a kind rig.

Contact is usually made via e-mail over the internet after someone has visited his internet site. There you can see pictures of the first one built. It of course was the very first one befor he decided the lines didn’t fit just right.

Mike then likes to meet (if possible) with the customer and goes over things like weather they want a Chevy, Ford, or Dodge chassis. Then they discuss the size of the engine, transmission, suspension, etc. After that a price quote is given to the customer and half is due at the time of order with the balance due in full upon delivery.

He is very organized and detail oriented. It’s just himself and his son that built these rigs so it takes about 160 days from start to finish and I can guarantee you he knows where every wrench, nut, bolt, screw,jack and lug nut is at in his shop.

This little shop is probably one of the best kept secrets in his community. Peterbilt Pick-Up Trucks are a custom and very unique vehicle which is also why they are considered a high end luxury vehicle. Not everyone can afford them. Which is probably a good thing because if everyone could, Mike would never get a break to rest.

When shopping for trucks, you probably have encountered the terms half-ton, three-quarter ton and one ton. What do each of these terms mean? And if you buy a half-ton truck does it mean your truck weights 1,000 pounds?

A half-ton truck actually does not refer to the weight of the truck. Half-ton pickups actually weigh more than a ton. The weight of a truck is actually described in terms of its ‘curb weight’. According to Edmunds, a 2007 half-ton pickup would normally have a curb weight of around 9000 and 11000 pounds. The term half-ton then refers to the truck’s payload capacity. Payload therefore means the truck’s carrying capacity of both cargo and passengers. And yet, statistically, most modern half-ton pickups can actually carry more than 1000 pounds.  Early model trucks could carry only max loads of 1000 pounds, but this was back in the 1960s. Yet, the term half-ton has stuck, even though it doesn’t mean exactly that. But in terms of classifying trucks, it helps to differentiate the half-ton from the larger three-quarter-ton and one-ton vehicles.

So, if you are looking to see how much your truck can haul, you will want to check out the truck’s specs within the manual or online. Remember that also when looking for hauling capacity, you are only looking at the weight carried, not towed. Towing capacity is completely different than hauling capacity.

In towing capacity there are again more terms to be familiar with. One is Gross Combined Weight Rating or GCWR and the other is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR). GCWR is the maximum weight of a truck, including the truck itself, cargo, passengers, fuel, trailer and trailer cargo. The GVWR is just the maximum weight of vehicle including passengers, cargo and tongue weight.

Many people will measure these weights by taking their loaded truck and trailer to a scale to find its weight. To determine the safe towing capacity of a loaded truck, one would take the GCWR and subtract the curb weight and the weight of everything in the truck, including passengers and cargo. They would then, take the GVWR and subtract the curb weight of the truck. Many manufacturers do not advertise these details and only promote the towing capacity of a truck based on only one driver whose weight is approximately 150 lbs. Realistically, your vehicle would have other passengers and cargo as well – all of this adds up.

Other considerations when looking at purchasing a truck for towing capacity is looking at variables such as the engine, transmission, quality of brakes and rear axle.

Although terminology of trucks isn’t completely accurate, it is still pretty much known that a half-ton truck is known for light duty and towing capacity while the three-quarter-tons and one-tons have bigger frames, firmer suspension and more powerful engines for pulling larger loads.

In the automotive industry, it can be difficult for consumers to accurately compare truck towing performance as there is little to no criteria. This is expected to change as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has created a committee that is working on a standard for measuring towing capacity. Until then, do your homework, ask questions and evaluate your needs before purchasing your next truck.
