Introduction

Tyler Hill Camp – Aerial View 2007

Tyler Hill Camp was founded in 1955 by William (Bill) Heft and Joe Bernstein. Bill was the Boys’ Head Counselor for over 25 years, at Camp Rosemont, in Honesdale, PA. Bill and his friend Joe Bernstein purchased the Wayne Country Club, where they transformed it into Tyler Hill Camp in 1956. They had a third partner, Bob Weinberger, who after a few seasons sold his share to Bill and Joe.

1990s

The 1990s brought the greatest change to Tyler Hill Camp. During the winter of 90/91, Sy Sundick, the Girls’ Head Counselor for thirty one years, and one of the key figures during Tyler Hill Camp’s most successful period, retired. Bill Heft and his wife Pauline, along with their daughter Marian and son-in-law Jimmy Bongino, and their daughter Carolyn M Heft, sold the camp to Jay S. Jacobs, owner of Timber Lake Camp and Timber Lake West. The sale, closed by their daughter, Carolyn M Heft, became official prior to the 1991 season, but the Heft’s and Bongino’s remained with the camp until the summer’s end. During the 1991 banquet dinner, the camp presented Bill and his wife Pauline with a set of golf bags as a symbol of gratitude for the last 36 years of hard work and dedication. In 1991, until 2005, Allen and Arlene Leibowitz were the Directors/Owners of Tyler Hill Camp and helped bring the camp back to what it used to be. With Al’s experience as a high school principal and Arlene’s experience as a teacher, they were chosen to oversee Tyler Hill’s entire summer operation.

The summer of 1991 also brought along a new tradition to help kick off, or “break out”, the end of the summer Color War competition between 2 teams of campers. With the entire camp gathered at the main basketball court, Jason Priestly, star of the hit show Beverly Hills, 90210, was the surprise celebrity guest that began numerous years of celebrity guest appearances.

The first major addition to camp in the 90’s was the addition of an Olympic size swimming pool in 1992. The pool was built where a hard-top volleyball court once stood down by Silver Lake. The same year, former Boys Bunk 1 and 2 was converted into a movie theater, featuring a projection screen and real movie theater seats from the then recently renovated Calicoon movie theater. The movie theater is used for rainy day and evening activities, as well as an additional location to practice for the annual Boys and Girls Sing competition.

In 1992, the boys campus bunk lineup changed for the first time in Tyler Hill Camp history. Original bunks 1-8 were unused, and Bunk 9 became Bunk 1 for the 1992 and 1993 season. These 2 years, only 13 boys bunks and Senior Hall, the bunk for Supers and CITS, were used. In 1994, the bunk lineup changed once again and remained the same until 2003. The order of the bunks were reversed, Bunk 1 starting the lineup on the opposite end of campus, with Bunk 20 in original Bunk 3’s former place. In 2003, 2 new boys bunks were built, situated next to the “new” Bunk 1 and 2. With this addition, the bunks continued through 22 in the same formation that it followed since 1994. The following summer, girls camp received its first major addition, when 2 new bunks were built on lower girls campus.(7&8)

The daily schedule underwent a minor adjustment in the early 90’s. Prior to 1993, girls camp ran on a 15 minute later schedule, mostly to alleviate the overwhelming kitchen staff at meal times. It was also at this time when the usually divided co-ed camp not only began to run on the same schedule, but gender specific buildings and activities were combined for use by everyone: the formerly split tennis program was equally divided to encompass both boys and girls camp; the separate lakefronts were split once again, with all swimming taking place on the former boys dock (pavilion) and boating taking place on the former girls dock; the 2 arts and crafts buildings were now used for both boys and girls on their elective periods, with new craft areas added to the girls arts and crafts building.

Starting in 1995, a 3 year project began for the construction of Tylerdome. During the summer of 1995, a new regulation roller hockey rink was built in deep outfield of the softball field closest to the boys bunks, adjacent to the pit (parking lot). The following summer, a new basketball court was built right next to the hockey rink, above the road overlooking the “rope burn” area. Finally, both the hockey rink and basketball court were covered in 1997, completing the Tylerdome. The dome featured high ceilings and was open on all sides, allowing for cool breezes throughout the hot summer days, but sheltered out the intense sun and offered an alternative location for rainy day activities.

In 1997, the camp switched to a “buggy duty” system, alleviating the need for waiter service in the dining room. One counselor from each table would pick up the food at a newly renovated counter in the center of the dining room, between the In/Out doors of the kitchen. Several years later, the dining room added toasters, as well as a pasta and soup station for the appropriate meals. The exceptions to the dining room service would be for Monday night Food Court and the Wednesday schedule of “Breakfast in Bed”, Buffet Lunch and BBQ dinner.

In 1999, a new outdoor adventure program was added to the daily schedule. The program, aptly named Quest, was conceived to facilitate team building exercises within each bunk, utilizing a new low and high ropes course off to the side of the golf course. Scheduled for a 3 hour extended period for every group once a week, the program allowed each member of the bunk an opportunity to showcase their leadership and cooperative group skills. Most of the same activities used throughout the summer are used during each pre-season counselor orientation, giving staff members the same opportunity to experience similar team-building exercises. The low-ropes course consists of various activities which require the group to work together to properly accomplish the specific task at hand. The high-ropes course consists of a climbing wall, with various levels of difficulty, a suspended bridge and a zip line. At the end of the 6 week Quest program, each bunk competes in an end-of-the summer WALO competition. All the skills experienced throughout the summer are put to a time test within each division, utilizing all the Quest activities on “Water”, “Air”, “Land” and “Odyssey”.

2000s

The last several years brought a lot of structural changes to the campus. Beginning at the start of the decade, a porch was added to each of the respective Head Counselor Offices (HCO’s). In addition, the girls camp HCO was moved to the far corner of girls campus, closer to the super bunks, to open up the campus and allowing a better view of Silver Lake. In 2002, a wrap-around porch was added to the canteen and the following year, the interior was renovated, adding wood paneling throughout the perimeter of the building. Two new boys and girls bunks were also added added due to the increasing camp enrollment, allowing for more flex space in the latter bunks. The boys bunk (1&2) was added to the line of bunks closest to the lake and the girls bunk (7&8) was added behind 11&12, completing the lower girls campus. In the early part of the decade, the main and secondary roads that lined the campus were paved, followed by the addition of new foot paths in 2006, leading in front of the lower campus boys bunks (1-16) and the upper campus girls bunks (9-16).

Tyler Hill Camp, 2006

During the winter of 2002-2003, the Social Hall suffered extensive roof damage after a sizable snowfall. The building was un-repairable, so plans were drawn up to construct a new, larger building to facilitate a growing camper enrollment. The foundation was laid in 2003 and the building was officially completed for the 2004 summer season. The new building was built similar to the original design, with the exception that it was not built on risers, but rather on a concrete slab. The design was similar to the canteen, with a cathedral ceiling throughout plus a back patio, rather than a porch. The building featured a state-of-the art sound booth in the back of the building, with costume rooms, larger bathrooms and a dance room and weight room off to either sides. The building received another facelift in the fall of 2006, when hard wood flooring was placed throughout the building.

For the summer of 2006, the Arts & Crafts building received a much needed renovation. The woodshop, formerly the Boys Arts & Crafts building, moved the existing ceramics shop to the former Girls Arts & Crafts building right next door, allowing the cooking program to take its place. A wrap-around deck was added to combine both buildings into one large Arts & Crafts center, offering woodshop, rocketry, candlemaking, cooking, stained glass, tye-dye, painting and macram/beads. Also the former Cooking Shack (formerly the Nature Shack) was taken down and a patio was put on the foundation to make a cooking and seating area for Quest breakfast and lunch. Cooking was moved into the Arts & Crafts pavilion overlooking the Quest breakfast and lunch area. In the fall of 2006, construction began on a new Gymnastics pavilion overlooking Silver Lake. This pavilion will replace the existing gymnastics facility, which was situated in the pavilion of the old Boys campus dock.

In 2006, Andy Siegel and his wife Wendy assumed the position as Director/Owners of Tyler Hill Camp, along with Justin Mayer as Assistant Director and Bette Jane Weisenthal as Associate Director of Girls Camp. Andy Siegel joined Tyler Hill Camp in 1993 as the Freshman group leader. He previously held the positions as Assistant Boys Head Counselor, Boys Head Counselor and Associate Director. Justin Mayer joined Tyler Hill Camp in 2003 as a Division Leader. He previously attended Timber Lake Camp and following his stint as a Division Leader, became the program director in 2004 and Boys Head Counselor in 2005. Justin Mayer was assistant director from 2006 until 2009, after which he accepted the Director job at Timber Lake West Camp. Bette Jane Weisenthal started Tyler Hill Camp in 1979 as a group leader. After several years as a group leader for the Junior, Inter and Sub-Senior girls, Bette assumed the position as Director of the Drama department starting in 1988, a position she held until 1995. In 1996, she transitioned back to girls camp as the Girls Head Counselor, with Cindy Davidowitz as Assistant Head Counselor for several years, before passing that position on to Alyssa Flaum.

In 2009 the popular movie theater was changed back into bunks due to the enrolement of 35 new campers. A new movie theater was constructed behind bunks 5 and 6.

Tyler Hill Traditions

A camp is more than a collection of buildings and land. What makes a camp special are those traditions that spring up over the years.

Color War – An end of the summer competition where the entire camp is split into 2 teams, Blue & White, led by counselor leaders known as “officers”. Lasting between 5 and 6 days, points are earned through athletic activities, sportsmanship, boating and swimming relays, all culminating with a “Sing” competition. Campers anticipate Color War all summer long, awaiting the “Break Out” towards the final week of the summer. Camp spirit is high, as both teams compete for the most sought after prize, the hatchet.

A hatchet is hidden in a well disguised location, with clues released twice a day, leading to the hatchet’s general vicinity. The search is fierce, as many of the clues are riddles or anagrams, sending many hatchet hunters on a wild goose chase. The clues generally become easier as the competition draws to a close, allowing campers of all ages to decipher and search for the hatchet. Once the hatchet is found, this gives that team an added boost of confidence for remainder of the competition.

The Cisco Kid, The Hawk and Wonder woman – As the days draw closer to Color War, these characters make an appearance, alerting the camp that Color War is quickly approaching. The Cisco Kid, donned with a poncho and sombrero, is the guardian of girls camp. He advises the entire camp that he will defeat the Hawk, the guardian of boys camp, to kick-off the start of Color War. Legend has it that Color War can not officially start until the Cisco Kid defeats the Hawk in a full-out battle in front of the entire camp. After brief appearances by both the Cisco Kid and the Hawk, Wonder woman relays information to girls camp from the Cisco Kid, that he is ready for the final battle with the Hawk and that the Cisco Kid will prevail. Conveniently, the Cisco Kid has always won the final battle and Color War has started without hesitation shortly thereafter every summer.

Color War Breakouts – Starting in 1991, a celebrity was brought to camp to break out the Color War competition. The celebrities that have appeared for a Color War breakout are as follows:

Watermelon Sacrifice – Legend has it that many summers ago, Big Al Leibowitz walked out on the boys dock during an intense storm and was greeted by a voice that instructed him to carry out sacrifices in honor of the Watermelon God. He promised Big Al that every summer he would provide ripe watermelons to Big Al’s lake as long as the sacrifice takes and the white seeds were properly disposed of in the “boooket”. Whenever Big Al noticed watermelons floating in the crib, he would gather a group of campers for the official ceremony. A sacrifice was chosen, most typically a staff member, and after a special prayer was said, the Watermelon God made it known whether or not the sacrifice was worthy of the newly discovered watermelons. If the Watermelon God accepted the sacrifice into the lake, it was a sign that Big Al could cut open the watermelons for the group. The first step was to properly pass out the “schmekal”, or tail end of the watermelon, to the youngest camper in that group. If the camper was able to balance the schmekal on their head, they were able to keep it as a souvenir, providing they stored it in a tightly sealed zip-lock bag. After the schmekal was handed out, it was time to determine whether the watermelon was edible. If the watermelon was red, everyone was able to feast on the offering. If not, the watermelon was unable to be eaten and had to be properly disposed of. The main reason given for an unripened watermelon was if someone from the previous summer spit the white seeds instead of the black ones into the lake, rather than into the “boooket” with the rest of the watermelon rinds.

As we grow older, we tend to get aggravated by the complexities of the world and yearn for simpler times. You suddenly recognize the complications caused by technology, overcrowding, government bureaucracy, and changes in moral values, thereby causing you to fondly think back to less stressful times, particularly in childhood. I happened to mention this to some of my older friends recently who began to reminisce about the simpler times they experienced growing up. Their descriptions make for an interesting tapestry of images:

At home it was not uncommon to have two newspapers delivered daily, a morning paper and another for the evening. Yes, back then people would read habitually as they wanted to know what was going on in the world and, believe it or not, actually trusted the press. You would also listen to the radio routinely and use your imagination. When television came along, there would be just three channels representing the major networks and possibly a fourth channel for a local independent which featured classic monster movies on Saturday nights hosted by such people as the “Cool Ghoul.” Somehow the programming seemed better as we enjoyed the golden age of television which included comedies, dramas (particularly Westerns and detective series), talk shows, soap operas, and variety shows. Only the cream of the crop made it to the television screen, and, No, there were no reality shows. Remote controls were a rarity. If you wanted to change the channel, you had to get out of your chair to do so. Not surprising, you became a devotee of a single network. Instead of cable we strapped bizarre looking antennas to chimneys and grounded them in fear of lightning strikes.

Party phones were common in many households whereby two or more parties shared a line, thereby saving costs. It wasn’t uncommon to pick up the phone and hear your neighbor talking with someone else. If this happened, common courtesy dictated you hang up quietly as opposed to listening in.

Only the very rich had remote controls to open garage doors. Most people had to get out of their car to open the door, or dispatch their children to do so.

If your neighbor needed help, you didn’t think twice to lend a helping hand, be it to shovel snow, cut their grass, run an errand for them, lend your car, deliver a meal, or help any way you could. Everyone instinctively watched out for each other and you could keep the front door unlocked.

Kids kept busy by cutting grass, raking, sweeping, and other chores around the house. For entertainment they would play baseball, fishing, swimming or outdoor games like tag, hide and seek, Red Rover, Dodge Ball, Johnny on the Pony (aka Buck Buck), etc. You also built a lot of forts to hide in and plot skullduggery. In the winter you would skate, sled, make snow forts, and a snowball fight was always imminent. You would also collect and trade baseball cards, shoot marbles, and play with yo-yos, tops, Super Balls, even Hula Hoops. Only if it rained, were you allowed to stay inside. If you were really lucky, you went to a double feature on a Saturday afternoon.

Sundays were used to bring the family together. After church you would go to either the home of your grandparents or that of an aunt or uncle, where you enjoyed a large dinner. You might also go to a nearby park where you could barbecue. Such festivities would be concluded late in the afternoon so people could get home to watch Disney, Lassie, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, or Ed Sullivan.

As to humor, it seemed everyone knew how to tell a joke and, No, they were not always politically correct. Kids told knock-knock jokes and puns. Parents gravitated to burlesque or vaudeville type of jokes. Groucho Marx would make you think, Jack Benny’s “cheap” persona was always good for a laugh, and “Uncle Miltie” and the “Great One” ruled the airwaves in the early days of television.

The focal point of the neighborhood was the corner store where you would purchase items for the household, be it food or sundries. If they didn’t have it, they could order it for you. They were the precursors of today’s convenience stores, only better. Proprietors were well known and respected in the neighborhood. It wasn’t uncommon for customers to stop in simply to chat and gossip about what was going on in the community. Before air conditioning, such stores had ceiling fans to circulate the air, wooden floors, and the front door was screened with a retracting spring to keep it closed. When it swung shut it made a distinctive snapping sound. Old cash registers were behind the counter, built of brass and had brilliant designs etched into them. When a sale was made, a small bell would ring and the cash drawer would pop open. Items purchased at the corner store were often done so “on credit.” The proprietor would keep tab of everything and at the end of the month you were expected to “settle up.” The store smelled heavenly of fresh ground coffee, bead, and there was a pickle barrel with a delicious brine.

For kids, stores offered “penny candy” which was an array of sweets consisting of such delicacies as rock candy, paper strips with dots, root beer barrels, fireballs, licorice, gum drops, pixie sticks, etc. For a mere dime you would have more than enough sweets to satisfy you. Soft drink machines came as horizontal chests, not “uprights”, where you would slide a glass bottle by its neck across an inside track and into the dispenser where you deposited your coins. I never saw a fat kid, probably because we either ran everywhere or rode bicycles which represented freedom. We would drive our bikes for miles, either to school, the store, a fishing spot, a camp site, a baseball field, or wherever. As kids, we would camp out, cook over a camp fire, and cleaned up afterwards. We also carried swimming suits with us in case we found an inviting pond or stream to jump into. A rope swing into the water was heavenly. Occasionally we would experience an accident, but you learned to take your medicine. Crying was natural but if you did so too long, you were a “spazz.”

Many items were delivered to your home. The milk man would deliver glass bottles to galvanized metal boxes by the kitchen door. If they sat there for awhile, you could watch the cream rise to the top. Bread was delivered, as were eggs, butter and cheese. The ice man would deliver large chunks to keep your “ice box” cold (not refrigerator). Coal was delivered through chutes going into the furnace room of your basement. It was normally the responsibility of the children to keep the furnace stoked during winter time. A popcorn man would make the rounds, selling bags for pennies. Ice cream was sold likewise. The fish man would also visit regularly, usually announcing his presence with a cowbell or some other audio attraction. There was also a person to sharpen knives and cutlery. The Fuller Brush man visited your home with a wide variety of brushes for sale, and Avon called frequently. Peddlers also went door-to-door selling medicines, salves, spices, concentrated flavors for cooking, and just about anything else. In other words, the vendors came to the customer, just the antithesis of today. And before trucks, there were pushcarts and horse drawn wagons.

Libraries played an important role in society where reading was stressed. They too traveled to the public in mobile libraries. Children were encouraged by parents to read. Before bedtime parents would read classics to their offspring like “Peter Pan,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Moby Dick,” and the Dr. Seuss classics. Kids have a natural attraction to story telling, and it was a great way to wind up the day.

To get to school, you either walked, rode a bike, took a bus, or went in a carpool. Walking offered you freedom to take your time, talk to your friend, and investigate every shortcut. Yes, it seemed like we walked for miles, but it wasn’t really that bad. If you took the bus, you could make last minute adjustments to your homework or prep for a test. Taking your bike was the most fun as you were proud to show off your bike and, No, you didn’t have to lock your bike with a chain. In Connecticut, we participated in a carpool where the mothers took turns driving the kids to school and pick them up afterwards.

Most kids took a brown bag to school for lunch which included sandwiches wrapped in wax paper, and some fruit. Lunch boxes were a luxury. During my time, you longed for a lunch box featuring Davy Crockett, the Lone Ranger, or Superman. Inside would be a thermos filled with either hot soup or a cold drink. You paid pennies for milk. Cafeteria lunches were also available, which were both delicious and inexpensive (as cheap as a dime). Personally, I loved the meatloaf the Polish women made at my Chicago Junior High School.

Kids would go to school equipped with a pencil box which included fresh pencils, erasers, a ruler and a sharpener. Before ball point pens there were fountain pens. At your desk was a bottle where you would draw the ink into the pen. This was later replaced by pens with ink cartridges. No matter what you did though, you would somehow find a way to get ink on your shirt pocket. And just about everyone had a box of Crayola crayons.

You would go to school well dressed and properly groomed. Boys wore collared shirts, slacks and street shoes were the norm. T-shirts, blue jeans, shorts, and sneakers were verboten. Girls wore dresses or skirts with blouses. You were sent home if the dress was too short or looked inappropriate. Likewise, hair had to be cut to specific lengths (off the collar), and facial hair was not allowed.

The school day would begin with the pledge of allegiance to the flag and a patriotic song. Some schools also followed this with a nondenominational prayer. To be selected to the school’s Safety Patrol was considered an honor, as well as to raise the flag in the morning and strike the colors at the end of the day.

Classes included reading, writing, and arithmetic, with a lot of penmanship thrown in for good measure. You had to memorize the preambles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, if not more. Both American and World history were stressed, as well as civics. We also took speech classes, Earth Science, and learned the various branches of mathematics, not to mention typing.

In High School you were offered the opportunity to learn new skills in Wood Shop, Metal Shop or Mechanical Drawing. In such shops you built a variety of things, particularly a wide array of book shelves and bird houses. In the drawing class, you learned to master t-squares, compasses, and my personal favorite, the French curve.

Everyone knew not to fight in school as you could expect corporal punishment with a paddle. Instead, if somebody had a beef with another, you arranged to meet off campus and duke it out. At the end of the fight, when both boys were exhausted, they shook hands and consoled each other. Whatever they had been fighting over had been forgotten.

Teachers and parents were allowed to bring home-baked goods to school, such as donuts, pies, and cakes. Nothing was brought in from the store. During Halloween you would receive regular sized candy bars, popcorn balls, and candied apples. There was no such thing as “fun size.” I still remember Mrs. Derdarian’s fabulous caramel apples on a stick.

Time seemed to crawl along at a snail’s pace. You couldn’t wait for the bell to ring to go back outside. Today it seems time moves at a much faster pace and we are required to multitask everything. I wonder if we have forgotten to relax.

There was a genuine respect for the law. When a police officer asked you to move along, you did so as you trusted his judgment. There was no thought of talking back to him. He was your friend and you knew him by name, as he knew yours as well as your parents. He knew who the good kids were, as well as the trouble makers.

In business, you were expected to work hard regardless of your job, and put forth your best effort to produce quality work products, and take on a professional attitude. Instead of working at odds with your co-workers and boss, you tried to get along and work together. As in school, you dressed neatly and bathed regularly. You were charged to use your head and find a way to get the job done. And the customer was always right.

This is not so much about nostalgia as it is about how society seems to have made life more complicated than it needs to be. The world depicted herein is how many of us like to remember yesteryear. As a kid, you learned to innovate, adapt, and be resourceful. You also learned life was full of consequences, for every action there was a reaction. The emphasis back then was to work and play outdoors, be it summer or winter, but the kids today stay indoors hooked to their technology and now possess a sense of entitlement. They cannot possibly relate to the world of yesteryear where you were adventurous and took responsibility for your actions. Government at all levels has evolved into an incredible bureaucracy with a mind-boggling number of laws, rules and regulations aimed at stifling business and frustrating ambition. And our morality has shifted to the point where a person’s word is no longer their bond and we are suspicious of the motives of others.

So, were things really simpler in the good old days? Our predecessors probably asked the same question years ago. With every new technology comes another level of complexity which youth can more readily adapt to than their elders. Although technology may simplify some things, it complicates others. While today’s computers and smart phones have enhanced communications and expedited administrative tasks, people have developed an addiction which seems to have altered their personalities, interpersonal relationships and priorities. There is even a lack of concern regarding current events, and our youth has no interest in news.

As we grow older the differences between then and now becomes more apparent, but it is too late to change it back, you must go forward. I have also learned you do not truly appreciate the simplicity of the past until you’ve survived into the future. If you have no knowledge of the past, you have nothing to compare the present to and no appreciation of simpler times. To today’s youth, these are the good old days. Anything before is lost on them. They may be proficient in social media and computer games, but they will never appreciate the sheer joy of capturing a firefly, whittling, building a campfire, reading a book, or running a “pickle.” It’s the little things that make life enjoyable, not its complexities. The older generation may not be as proficient in the use of technology, but they didn’t suffer from all of today’s anxieties, allergies, obsessions and disorders either. Back then, there was no such thing as OCD, PTSD, BDD, bulimia, or Prozac. Instead, we had such things as Scouting, 4H, dime stores, Tarzan, J.C. Higgins, Louisville Sluggers, the YMCA, and God.

You can expect an eviction if your home is sold because of a foreclosure sale. Whether the sale is by auction, or by a trustee’s or sheriff’s sale, the actual eviction is the legal process by which a property owner has a tenant or trespasser physically removed. When your home is sold at a foreclosure sale, you become a trespasser as soon as the court ordered “Notice to Evict” is issued by the court. In some states, the lender’s attorney can request the eviction notice to become part of the final judgment and automatically be in effect when the property is sold at the auction. As a trespasser, you have minimal rights so take appropriate action to remove your belongings as soon as you know you aren’t staying in your home.

Evictions for renters are handled by strict contract law standards and the tenant often has more rights than the landlord. In many states, tenants can sue their landlord for breach of contract, possibly harassment and receive many times their monthly rent if they win the lawsuit. Some cities make it extremely difficult to evict tenants for almost any reason. This is not the case with foreclosure evictions because the former homeowners are not tenants, they have become trespassers. Well-meaning people often tell foreclosure victims about experiences they know about where tenant/landlord law was involved. Again, this is not the situation where foreclosures are involved.

Foreclosure evictions are handled slightly differently in most cities so it is important that you contact the court issuing the eviction notice to determine what to expect. The person who serves the eviction notice, or posts it on the front door usually is not the same person who will enforce the eviction. The eviction will be enforced by a representative of the court, often a county sheriff or policeman. Occasionally, the person giving the notice will tell you that you “actually” have an extra 24 hours, BUT DON’T expect or plan on having this extra time, rather plan on being completely moved out before the actual deadline.

If you are looking at being homeless, contact your local Red Cross or county housing agency for a place to stay temporarily and for cash if necessary. If you have the ability to rent a storage unit for your furniture, store it until you find a place to stay so you aren’t driving a rental truck around town looking for a place to rent. A little preparation is useful in avoiding tons of aggravation later.

The actual eviction may be handled differently, but often an officer of the court (sheriff or policeman) accompanies the new owner, or his representative to the property and alerts anyone in the premises that the eviction will start in a few minutes. In this case, the owner’s representative is responsible for removing everything they don’t want from the premises. The people in the premises are being evicted, not the contents of the property! If the contents are junk or the owner doesn’t want any of it, it usually will be thrown into the swale or the street for sanitation to pick up. If the former owners are not in the premises (at work), the contents could still be thrown out or kept by the new owner. The items put in the street sometimes start a feeding frenzy among the neighbors. Don’t let this happen to you. Take action to resolve your foreclosure early or get moved out before the actual eviction occurs. If you are uncertain about your rights, contact an attorney or legal aid services for help.

I am sorry to say that I learned recently that the Wolf line of products will no longer be produced. No more Wolf Car Covers. No more Wolf Powersport products. Gone are ATV Covers and Accessories.

As you may or may not know, the Wolf Automotive product lines ceased production around the end of March or beginning of April when its parent company, Global Accessories went into receivership. Global continued to accept orders from our http://AccessorizeYourVehicle.com website for covers that were in stock, but then canceled many of these orders and stop accepting orders completely.

We were eventually told that Coverking had reached a tentative agreement to purchase Global. What we were not told was that the actual sale was conducted via auction. When the auction day came, Covercraft swooped in and outbid Coverking. When I first spoke to the people at Global they were excited about the purchase because they thought the two companies cultures and product lines were complementary and they hoped that Covercraft would continue to market their products, thereby keeping their jobs intact.

It retrospect it appears that Covercraft not only saw a way to branch out into two new product areas, dash covers and floor mats, but maybe more importantly, a way to eliminate a major competitor to their car cover line, who sold the same or nearly the same product for less. Sometimes a lot less.

To be fair to Covercraft, it does appear that they put more effort into creating the patterns used to create their car covers than Wolf. Where Wolf would have one pattern to fit a specific year, make and model of vehicle, Covercraft could have two or three patterns to accommodate various model configurations.

Wolf’s line of car covers were made exclusively using the fabrics manufactured by Kimberly Clarke. Covercraft also offers covers made using the same Kimberly Clarke fabrics, plus a selection of higher end fabrics that complete nicely with Coverking’s upper end fabrics. When it came to head to head product comparisons, the Wolf line of car covers appeared to be more popular than the Covercraft equivalent.

Although Covercraft markets their products based on product quality and not price, in our experience, the message is not having an impact on the end consumer. First of all, both Wolf and Covercraft boasted that their factories meet ISO quality standards. And they were both using the same fabric. And to one up Covercraft, Wolf extended the Noah fabric warranty provided by Kimberly Clarke from 4 years to 5 years.

Personally I appreciate the fact that Coverking products are still made here in the good ol’ USA. Global Accessories had moved the Wolf, DashMat and Premier Floor Mat lines from Ohio to south of the border. I am still having trouble buying the argument that we are better off exporting our jobs to Mexico and China while keeping our free market borders open and trying to compete against products produced by foreign government subsided companies. But that’s the topic of another article.

A Wolf car cover made using the same Noah fabric used by Covercraft was usually priced 15% – 20% less then the Covercraft car cover. So from the consumer’s point of view it was the same fabric, a better warranty and $30 cheaper. It was an easy choice to make. Wolf even subsidized the shipping cost by charging a flat $5.00 handling fee.

BUT, you say, Wolf went out of business! So maybe they priced themselves out of profitability. Well, for sure, Global Accessories was hurt by the economic credit crunch. Whether their business failure was the result of a specific product line or how profitable each product line was, I do not know. I do know the tonneau business was suffering due to the near stand still in truck sales. Covercraft had exited the tonneau market last year and did not pick up Global’s Lebra or Downey tonneau lines.

So back to the subject at hand. I am disappointed that Covercraft is killing off the Wolf product lines. Eight years ago, before I was in the automotive after market accessories business, I bought a Wolf Evolution cover for my ’99 Mustang Cobra. I am still using it. When my cover tore around the antenna because I did not install the reinforcement patch correctly, Wolf sent me a piece of Evolution fabric so I could cover my mistake.

Wolf (Global Accessories) has been good to me, as a consumer and as an internet marketer. I will miss them.

– An individual who pays a moving company to move and store their belongings will likely have quality items.

– If you see addresses on the boxes that are from wealthy neighborhoods, there is a good chance there will be quality items in the boxes.

– Look for high quality items. If you see popular brand names, there is a good chance that there are some quality products in the unit.

– Sealed boxes that are arranged in a neat and tidy manner can indicate that the previous owner took the time to carefully pack and secure the items. There is an increased likelihood that they have quality merchandise. You can often find such items as coin and stamp collections, jewelry, expensive tools,etc. Of course, there is always the risk of getting junk items.

– If there is dust on the boxes and items, this may mean there are old items. This may mean that there are antiques or collectables.

– If a storage company pays to advertise an auction in the paper, there is a chance that there are quality items.

To find a storage-unit-auction, check the auction classified section in the newspaper, online classified sites for your area, and bulletin boards of local supermarkets and post office. You can also call your local storage companies to find out when they will be holding their next auction.

Storage Unit Auctions are a great way to pick up cheap items. There is a risk of getting junk, but you can always hold your own yard sale to get rid of items you don’t want.
